Denim Shorts & Hot Sauce: Samba, Culture & Survival in Rio
Have you ever heard of a Black girl from New York City venturing to South America by herself to become a dancer?
Well, I am that lady.
In 2018, I had a dream that needed to be fulfilled. Scared, excited and new to the world, I ventured to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to become the dancer of my dreams. I spoke little to no Portuguese, I navigated the outskirts of Rio determined to be that dancer. The sparkle in my eyes glistened, I am new to this city, so different from my own. I was inspired and determined. But little did I know challenges were afoot. Join me as we go down memory lane through experiences that not only changed my life but can also help you venture your way to South America.
A birds eye view of my experience in Rio de Janeiro as an US American.
